Dark Flower
National Sawdust
Wednesday, April 20, 7:00 p.m.
We’re calling our first concert at National Sawdust The Light Within, after Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Luther Adams’ moving work, our concert opener. But the evening has several other exciting gems as well! First off, we have an awesome piece by superstar Huang Ruo, for ensemble and a LIVE painter: Confluence. We will work with award-winning artist Rebecca Allan, who will paint in watercolors in real time (projected above the musicians) to the music. It’s a thrilling, abstract work, and this will be its NYC Premiere! Rising star Indian-American composer Reena Esmail has composed a new version for us of her solo cello piece Perhaps, accompanied by the world premiere of a new film by Heather McCalden, and played by our own amazing Colin Stokes. As if that were not exciting enough, we will also perform two works by wild and wonderful Dutch composer Jacob TV (Jacob ter Veldhuis,): Grab It!, for electric guitar and soundtrack, played by our astonishing guitarist Jordan Dodson; and Jesus is Coming, for saxophone quartet and soundtrack.
